Image, memory and fiction in the Baltics

Eve Kiiler (3-4/2011)

Eve Kiiler writes about the works of the younger generation of photo artists from the Baltic States

The exhibition of photo artists born between 1970 and 1980, Generation of Place: Image, Memory and Fiction in the Baltics, at Tallinn Art Hall is one of the main events in the Tallinn Month of Photography. The exhibition curated by the Lithuanian media theorist and activist Vytautas Michelkevičius is part of a larger project: Re:Searching the Baltics. To study the landscape and pass the control points on the path, the introduction offers questions to the observer, such as ‘What does it mean to be a generation attached to a certain place? Does a place influence us or is it we who influence the place? Does geo-political regional unity bring about common features in art? What is common memory and how does it take shape in pictures?’
