New York diary

Liisa Kaljula (3-4/2011)

Liisa Kaljula in the Big Apple – October 2011

This time Brooklyn is the first place where I exit the underground. I reach New York on 5 October. It is the day that one of the icons of American life, Steve Jobs, died. The weather is unsuitably nice. People are unsuitably happy. But America is currently busy celebrating its tenth day of remembrance. In PS1 there is an exhibition about September 11. Tickets to the Ground Zero Memorial were sold out months in advance. However, the most interesting place in New York is Zuccotti Park, Manhattan. There is a desire that the wealthiest 1% of society look further than their own nose and justify the tax reliefs given them: ‘It ain’t trickling down fast enough!’
