Stillness in contemporary French art

Paul Bernard (1-2/2010)

Paul Bernard gives a critical overview of the contemporary French art scene

If we throw a quick glance at the publications and articles issued since 2000, we get the impression that contemporary French art is in a state of crisis: contemporary French artists are scarcely represented at home and abroad and the French art market is suffering great difficulties in developing further. The problem seems to stem from governmental institutions and their crippling control over the collection, dissemination and promotion of contemporary art. Interestingly, the majority of French artists included in the collections of the Tate Modern in London are from the last well-known school – Nouveau Réalisme. Is it possible to talk about common characteristics in French art?
