Anchoring ephemerality
Mari Laaniste (3-4/2009)
The annual exhibition of the Estonian Artists’ Association is not essentially an art event. The association’s annual exhibition rather serves as a ritualistic event, in the safe anachronism of which the participators seem to find some sort of solace or affirmation that habitualness persists. Regularly repeated ritual occasions are like symbolic anchors, which prevent art from floating off to self-sufficiency, into an ephemerality others care nothing about. A large part of the renowned performers actually do what they always do. For this reason, surprises or lack of routine are scarce.
