Comparative analysis – Seanahk and Global Container 8

Rebeka Põldsam (3-4/2009)

Rebeka Põldsam compares the international art festival Seanahk, held in Haapsalu in July, and the art festival Global Container, held at the Polymer Culture Factory in Tallinn in August

A positively bright memory of the conversations of a versatile crowd, a spectacle and some good music was all born out of the dialogue between a raggedy-looking Soviet variety venue (Lääne Kalur) and the port, the exhibitions and the peculiar container/concert stage. Global Container, like Seanahk, was a spectacle; the program of both festivals was not overly stocked. Global Container was also preceded by a group discussion on The Power of Art. The discussion concluded with some of the artists claiming that artists are better than ‘common people’, because they are more socio-critical, more educated and in the end, it is their mission to direct the ‘common people’ with the help of art. For some reason, the issue of the power of art was not dealt with in terms of social visibility: what should be done so that art that relates to the present can address more people?
