Sirli Hein’s disturbing childhood
Maarin Mürk (3-4/2009)
Maarin Mürk views the new work by Sirli Hein, also know as a ‘horror artist’, at Hobusepea Gallery
The title of the exhibition, Pictures from Childhood, seems to refer to something sentimental, but this is a preconception that misguides the viewer. The childhood depicted by Hein is a disturbing world, sometimes impossible to grasp.Hein’s paintings are reminiscent of film stills, and the script has reached the point where the viewer senses that something horrible is going to happen. The general anxiety that society and culture suffers from feeds a constant sense of deficiency. This feeling has also driven the artist to increasingly ‘bring things out into the open’.
